infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious
diseases.
COVID-19 is the disease caused by a new coronavirus. It was first
reported in December 2019 in Wuhan City in China.
Other coronaviruses include Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
(MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

All passengers arriving from Great Britain must self-quarantine for 14 days and arrange a COVID-19 (RT-PCR) test taken at least 5 days after arrival in Ireland. This test is free of charge (See 'Travel'). For passengers who are fully vaccinated, the 14-day period of self-isolation can be shortened if they receive a not-detected RT-PCR test result 5 days after arrival. Those who are not fully vaccinated must remain in quarantine and have a second not-detected RT-PCR test 10 days after arrival. All passengers arriving in Ireland must show a negative/not detected test result from a pre-departure COVID-19 (RT-PCR) test taken within the 72 hours prior to arrival. Antigen or other test types do not meet the requirement. Some exemptions exist, including for travellers from Northern Ireland, children under six and transit passengers. Arrivals from “high risk” countries (including transit through “high risk” countries) and people arriving in Ireland without a negative RT-PCR test must complete a 14-day mandatory quarantine in a hotel (advance booking required). All other arrivals need to quarantine at home.
Hajj will be limited to 60,000 citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia that haven’t attended Hajj in the last five years. Pilgrims must be vaccinated, free from chronic disease and between 18 and 65 years of age. From 1 August, proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required for entry into the majority of premises in Saudi Arabia. Entry into Saudi Arabia remains suspended for expatriates travelling from nine countries (see 'Travel'). The ban also applies to expatriates transiting any of the nine countries in the 14 days prior to their planned arrival into Saudi Arabia. Tourist visas remain suspended.
The number of international flights to Pakistan has reduced significantly. COVID-19 testing and quarantine regulations have also changed for arriving passengers. Contact your airline or travel agent for the latest information.
Qatar has implemented comprehensive COVID-19 restrictions. Strict penalties apply for non-compliance. Stay up to date with current restrictions and the travel policy (see 'Travel').
Austria has lockdown measures in place (see 'Travel'). Borders remain open, but you must register online before entering Austria. Local regulations and entry restrictions can change at short notice. Keep in contact with your travel provider for the latest information. Follow the advice of local authorities.
You can enter Armenia with a negative COVID-19 (PCR) test result taken no more than three days before your arrival. If you arrive without a test result, you'll be required to take a test at the airport and isolate until the results are available. Social distancing measures remain in place and you must wear a mask at all times when in public places, including on public and private transport. The Armenian Government has abolished the state of emergency/martial law which was declared in 2020 following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We advise Australians not to travel within 5kms of Armenia's border with Azerbaijan due to the risk of armed conflict.
